McGrail (District Chief, Denver Fire Department) seeks to correct what he considers a deadly lack of training in many fire departments regarding the specifics of high-rise buildings and those equipped with standpipes. Chapters address the four generations of high-rise construction; classes, types, and components of standpipe systems; features of low-rise buildings; elevator and stairway operations; nozzle selection; standpipe maintenance; air movement and ventilation; and operations by search and rescue, air support, and rapid intervention teams, among other concerns.
