Phonological Awareness Training for High Schools (PATHS)—Support Program Manual: for Speech Pathologists & Learning Support Staff

The PATHS program was developed to support teachers working with high school students who have trouble reading and writing because of deficits in the ability to identify, isolate, and blend sounds. The material is arranged in three tracks as follows: the first focuses on classroom-based reading instruction for all students, the second provides supplementary material for students who don't get it the first time in the classroom, and the third is for students whose deficits are more severe and require more intensive special instruction. Marinac (speech pathology, U. of Queensland, Australia) developed materials based on her experience treating secondary school students in speech pathology clinics; additional material was developed to introduce the three-tiered structure. Designed around explanations, direct skills learning, and compensatory strategies, the first of four tabbed sections in this three-ring binder is the "Support Program Manual for Speech Pathologists & Learning Support Staff." It comprises 177 reproducible pages, each with a lesson pertaining to sounds, spelling, letter games, core words, and memory strategies. Following is a student activity booklet (60 pages of reinforcement lessons). The third section is a classroom identification instrument (test and administration instructions), and the final section comprises forms for interpreting and recording test results. The included CD-ROM contains test forms, a student activity book, a vowel cue card, a learning preference questionnaire, and a reading log.
