Detailed profiles of writers, organizations, publications, and topics (such as the Civil Rights Movement) are arranged alphabetically in this useful reference important for public, school, and university libraries. It was previously published as African-American Writers; A Dictionary by ABC-CLIO in 2000. Grey House Publishing has taken on the second edition, giving the work a new title to represent substantially revised and expanded contents. Of the 738 profiles, 210 are new. A new 100-page section of original documents along with seven historical timelines add context, and categorization of writers by occupation adds an interesting point of access. Also included are a substantial references section, indexing by genre, a chronology by birth date, and a chronology of "first" events. Some (but not many) b&w photos are included.
