This small (5x7.5") biography captures the early days of air combat during WWI. Max Immelmann became one of the first German fighter pilots, quickly building an impressive score of victories as he became known as The Eagle of Lille. Founder of the aerial combat maneuver that still bears his name, Immelmann was credited with 15 victories during WWI. The book is based on Max Immelmann's letters and descriptions of his victories, and on the analysis of the author, Max's brother Franz Immelmann, and is illustrated with b&w historical photos. The book was first published in German as der Adler von Lille by K. F. Koehler, Leipzig, in 1934. The first English edition was published by John Hamilton in 1935 or 1936. It was reissued in facsimile by Greenhill Books/Lionel Leventhal Ltd. in 1990 with a new appendix by Normal Franks, offering a table of Immelmann's victories.
