Designed as a point defence interceptor to counter the high altitude atomic bomber threat, the Mirage IIIC was transformed into a multi-role combat aircraft by Dassault, and as such had to battle with the MiG-21 to secure air superiority in the Middle East during the Six Day War of June 1967. Superior Israeli tactics and rigorous training saw the Mirage IIICJ units prevail against superior numbers of Egyptian, Syrian and Iraqi fighters, despite the combat persistence of the Soviet-built MiG-21.
