Psychology, biophysics, cognitive science, ape research, and archaeology are among the disciplines from which researchers were drawn to Pont-a-Mousson, France, in November 2001 for a workshop on one of the activities that apparently only humans can learn today. The question underlying the gathering was the organization of bead production in the Indus Civilization during the third millennium BC given the different levels of expertise involved in stone-bead knapping. The purpose was to construct a reference base for interpreting the stone-knapping action in terms of motor and cognitive skills.
