商品簡介

The Library of Modern Thinkers is a series of authoritative introductions to the thought of important intellectual figures. Critical yet accessible, these volumes will instruct anyone seeking to understand the central questions of our time.

"Richard Reinsch has written an elegant and discerning study of one of the literary giants of modern conservatism. At a time when the American Right is striving to recover its intellectual bearings, the profoundly spiritual perspective of Whittaker Chambers is worth pondering anew. Reinsch's timely volume brings Chambers's thought into arresting focus."---George H. Nash author of The Conservative Intellectual Movement in America Since 1945 and Reappraising the Right

"Richard Reinsch's splendid meditation on the life and thought of Whittaker Chambers, the counterrevolutionary par excellence, provides the perfect antidote to a temptation all too easy to succumb to today: the reassuring illusion that Communism was doomed all along and that those who fretted about the threat were blind to the inevitability of global democratic bliss. Reinsch's book allows us to rediscover- or discover for the first time -the poet, philosopher, and teacher of immense spiritual depth who bore witness to the totalitarian negation of man even while showing its discomfiting links to our own `heroic quest for autonomist liberty.'"---Daniel J. Mahoney Assumption College, author of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn: The Ascent from Ideology

Whittaker Chambers is rightly remembered for his pivotal role in the electrifying Alger Hiss spy case. But as Richard M. Reinsch II reminds us in this latest volume in ISI Books' acclaimed Library of Modern Thinkers, Chambers was more than just a government informant; he was a profoundly important thinker who grappled with the nature of modern man's predicaments.

Whittaker Chambers: The Spirit of a Counterrevolutionary shows that Chambers's thought posed---and still poses---a challenge to American conservatism and its typical focus on markets and small government. In his journalism, essays, personal correspondence with the likes of William F. Buckley Jr., and landmark autobiographical tome Witness, Chambers engaged more broadly, analyzing the fundamental question of who man is and the classical and spiritual foundations of civilization.

Chambers famously remarked that he was "leaving the winning side for the losing side" by fleeing Communism. Defying conventional thinking, Reinsch argues that with this statement the former Communist spy may have been more right than wrong. While the Soviets' Communist system did of course collapse, the spiritual and philosophical sickness that Chambers identified has not been cured. Reinsch reintroduces Chambers's prescription for healing the West through sacrifice, classical thought, and spiritual awakening.

Through his voice and actions, Whittaker Chambers helped ignite contemporary American conservatism. But he was not merely a creature of the Cold War, as even many of his admirers are inclined to think. As Richard Reinsch shows in this illuminating intellectual biography, Chambers's thought remains an important source of insight. Indeed, given the state of conservatism and of the modern West, Chambers's penetrating insights may be more necessary today than they were even at the height of the Cold War.

Whittaker Chambers: The Spirit of a Counterrevolutionary recovers the wisdom we need.
