Reyes (romance languages, Washington & Lee U.) applies discourse analysis to the uses and abuses of voice by politicians--particularly Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, and George Bush--to achieve their goals. He traces how politicians invoke or inhabit three different roles in the pursuit of these goals: narrator, interlocutor, and character. He argues politicians use narrator voices to "present objectivity and therefore validate the story or facts presented." They use the interlocutor role to create rapport, diffuse tensions, and manufacture interactions. Finally, politicians invoke the character voice to align themselves with people or words the support their position, reactivating "a collective memory in the community and a shared belief among the listeners." The book is highly structured, with careful introduction of unfamiliar terms and perspectives offered throughout, as well as useful overviews at the start of each chapter.
