Anderson-Facile (sociology, California State U., Bakersfield) reports findings from a study of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle subculture, examining the new phenomena of Christian motorcycle ministries. In particular, the author focuses on the Black Sheep Harley-Davidsons for Christ (HDFC), a Christian motorcycle ministry that began in late-1999 as a single chapter in Southern California and now has approximately 26 chapters in 17 states, with over 500 hundred members. The research considers the contradictions facing the Christian biker in regard to conflicting cultural norms and values within the "Christian" and "biker" communities. Framed in identity theory, the study explores how the members of Black Sheep HDFC develop the identity of a biker and how this identity is maintained, manipulated, and perpetuated over time.
