"...I felt instinctively that Kant is deeply Chinese in his thinking, with close parallels (in very different ways) to both Confucian and Daoist philosphers..." writes Palmquist (religion and philosophy, Hong Kong Baptist University) in his preface, in reference to his encounter with Chinese philosophy in the early 1980s. He knew then that the subject was rich with potential for east-west exchange and began working on the idea of a conference, which eventually did take place in May 2009 in Hong Kong. This volume contains revised versions of 63 papers plus three keynote addresses and an epilogue by the editor. Arrangement is in three "books," the first of which encompasses groundwork topics such as epistemological foundations, personhood as a problem for rational metaphysics, the role of autonomy, and judgment. Contributions in the second "book" deal with various aspects of cultivating personhood in politics, ethics, and religion. Following are papers on Mou Zongsan and Kant on intellectual intuition, Chinese perspectives on self-cultivation, Kant in dialogue with other Asian traditions, and Kant on Asia and Asia on Kant. The contributors are philosophers based in North America, Europe, and Asia. Annotation c2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
