After the Spanish invasion and defeat of Aztec ruler Moctezuma in 1519, the city of Tenochtitlan, now Mexico City, was razed and rebuilt under Spanish control. Connell (history, Christopher Newport U.) examines strategies for indigenous political influence within the city over the next 200 years. He describes the political conflicts of the late sixteenth century, the failing of the royal line, and transition to elected officials. He considers the effect of the breakdown of the traditional tribute system after a period of political and natural upheaval, and the increasing ability of elected officials to thwart Spanish authority in local rule, leading to a more fully realized native rule by the early 18th century.
