商品簡介

Lubling (philosophy, Elon U., North Carolina) argues that the naturalistic writings of American pragmatist philosopher Dewey (1859-1952) afford the best context in which to articulate a post-Holocaust understanding of the person. He finds in those writings a demonstration that if contemporary discourse wants to be useful and relevant to the lives of plain men and women, it must give up transcendental viewpoints and begin its inquiries from what is truly known and and available. He discusses a history of an idea, Dewey's early developmental understanding of the person from Hegel to James, his later understanding from behavioralism to aesthetical anarchism, marching to Dewey, a case study of situated versus non-situated deliberation, and the problem with pacifism.
