This collection of readings is the second volume in the series, and covers African-American history from the beginning of the twentieth century up to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Taylor (American history, U. of Washington) provides background at the beginning of chapters, which are divided by period, and historical background on each document. Documents cover topics as various as politics, civil rights, the Black Power movement, culture, gender, social life, religion, racial identity, education, social class, sports, music, the environment, medicine, immigration, and crime. They include well-known and lesser-known texts, such as Martin Luther King Jr.'s Letter from a Birmingham Jail, African Americans and Environmental History: A Manifesto, Anita Hill's testimony before Congress, and writings by W.E.B. DuBois, Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, Elaine Brown, Jesse Jackson, and others. A few secondary sources are included.
