As with most of Madison's correspondence while US Secretary of State, the letters in this volume deal mainly with relations between the US and Great Britain, France, and Spain. Others are from consular agents across the globe, especially in and around the Mediterranean sea, and deal with the incorporation of the Louisiana Purchase into the US.
