商品簡介
This book, in which Mathieson (sociology of law, U. of Oslo, Norway) argues the inefficacy of imprisonment, first appeared in English in 1990. He addresses several arguments defending the prison system as a form of punishment, as rehabilitation for crime prevention, for general and individual prevention, for incapacitation and deterrence, and as a form of retribution. He concludes that the system has failed and discusses solutions. The third edition contains a new epilogue, more about the control aspects of prison, changes to prisons since 9/11 and the London bombings, and a discussion of the effects of contemporary events on crime, punishment, and civil liberties. The book is aimed at students, practitioners, and the general reader. Distributed by ISBS. Annotation c2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
