商品簡介
Bronkhorst (Sanskrit and Indian studies, U. of Lausanne, Switzerland) has lectured extensively during the past five years on various aspects of the material in this book, and he's glad to have had the opportunity to collect and consolidate his thinking for this presentation. In the first paragraphs of the first chapter he asserts his disagreement with prevailing notions of the origins of Buddhism as a reaction against vedic Brahmanism; this position is fully elaborated in his previous work (Greater Magadha), but he summarizes his information and arguments pertaining to the cultural and spiritual background of Buddhism so that readers have the basis for the present work. The subject is the interaction of Buddhism and Brahmanism, and the eventual disappearance of Buddhism from the Indian sub-continent. Annotation c2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
