Benjamin R. Barber, author of Jihad vs. McWorld and other books, has described the Greek concept of paideia as being similar to the "integrative humanist paradigms of education" prominent in the Enlightenment and called formation by the French and bildung by the Germans. In this collection of 23 papers taken from two international conferences held in Vienna (2002) and Boston (2003), contributions exploring the implications of the concept for education, philosophy, and religion during a time of cultural and political change are presented by a team of editors affiliated with Boston U.'s Paideia Project.
