Caro (political science, U. of Houston) sets forth a theory for the origins of "free peoples" in the world (by which he means polities that place freedom in a privileged place over other values such as equality, happiness, fairness, etc.). He posits the existence in political societies of "proto-freedom," which can take the form of popular intuitions, philosophers' institutions, the self-evident truths of Thomas Jefferson, and the thoughts of slaves, to cite some examples. It is when this "proto-freedom" comes under threat that it serves as the basis for the transition to "freedom," if, that is, the "anti-freedom" that threatens it also conforms to certain factors. Jason Caro is assistant professor of political science at the University of Houston-Downtown where he writes political theory, usually with a Continental approach. He teaches courses in American Political Thought and Political Theory.
