50 Early Childhood Literacy Strategies

Beaty (Elmira College), who consults and trains in early childhood education, provides pre-service and in-service teachers with 50 literacy strategies and activities for use with children three to five years old. She outlines the picture books and activities to use for speaking and listening, writing, and reading; how to use them; and how children can benefit. Activities involve books, blocks, chalk, crayons, computers, dolls, dramatic play, easel and finger painting, puppets, chanting, singing, and storytelling, and are tied to selected picture books. This edition includes new information on applications of new research and has new strategies and material on listening, vocabulary development, using dictation, working with dual language learners, and understanding kindergarten reading, as well as 77 new picture books, new activities, 29 new children's artifacts, and an appendix of websites.
