Power in the 21st Century—International Security and International Political Economy in a Changing World

The study of power is the nucleus of political science and international relations. As a shift of power from traditional industrial countries to emerging powers has been perceived since the turn of the century, this book aims to present innovative theoretical and empirical approaches that can increase our understanding of this transition. Scholars from the fields of international relations, international political economy, economics and security studies not only explore current theoretical debates on ‘power’ and ‘power shifts’ among entities, but also provide fresh insights into relevant aspects of international power in the 21st century. With a particular focus on aspects of international security, trade and production, new methods of identifying power and its sources are presented, and their potential implications and challenges are discussed.

Brigitte Falkenburg studierte Physik an der Universitat Erlangen, der Technischen Universitat Berlin und der Universitat Heidelberg, und Philosophie an den Universitaten Bielefeld und Heidelberg. Sie promovierte 1985 zum Dr. phil mit einer Arbeit aus der Naturphilosophie und 1986 zum Dr.rer.nat. auf dem Gebiet der Hochenergiephysik. Seit 1997 ist sie Professorin fur Philosophie der Wissenschaft und Technik an der Technischen Universitat Dortmund. Sie ist Mitglied in der ?Academie Internationale de la Philosophie des Sciences“, Brussel, und der ?European Academy of Science“. Zudem ist sie Sprecherin des Arbeitskreises Philosophie der Physik der DPG. Fur ihre Arbeit zur Philosophie der Wissenschaft wurde sie mehrfach mit Preisen ausgezeichnet und hat zahlreiche Bucher und Schriften zur Philosophie der Physik, Natur- und Technikphilosophie veroffentlicht.
