商品簡介
In these papers from a one-day symposium held at the University of California-Berkeley, contributors in development studies, political science, environmental policy, and sociology explore urban citizenship in an Indian rather than Euro-American context. They analyze specific cases of conflict over urban spaces and resources in six Indian cities: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, and Varanasi. The ethnographic case studies challenge assumptions that associate the middle classes with the exercise of rights and the powers of protest, and the lower classes with cooperation and patronage. Some specific paper topics include gendered slum citizenship, the politics of e-grievance redressal, the urban dispossessed and civil violence, and the politics of squatting. B&w photos are included. Desai is affiliated with the Center for Environmental Planning and Technology University's Center for Urban Equity, Ahmedabad, India. Sanyal teaches global urbanism at Newcastle University, UK.
