商品簡介
In this detailed analysis, Suzuki (art history, U. of Maryland) traces the history, figural styles, iconography, and ritual use of Yakushi, the Medicine Buddha. The origins of the figure, the histories of the various types of icons, and accounts of individual cult statues are the central topic, with the text heavily illustrated with b&w and color plates of the best quality. In telling the story of how Heian rulers and other donors contributed statues to temples, she describes the practices associated with the statues, including detailed discussion of the rites enacted at different temples and according to different Buddhist traditions. Suzuki also frequently grounds the history in present-day rituals, making this study as relevant to scholars of religion as it is to historians of Buddhist art.
