A 20-year veteran of the Denver Fire Department, Spurgeon explainshydraulics from the perspective of the street-levelpractitioner. First he looks at the theory and practice ofpencil-sharp hydraulics in order to give readers a basic understandingof water use in the fire service. He presents the simple mathematicalformulas used to calculate pumping and flows, then explains themechanics behind the equations: how pumps push water through hoses tothe fire, types of pumps, and the knobs and levers that make themwork. A 20-year veteran of the fire service, Paul Spurgeon began his career with the Denver Fire Department in 1991. After probation, he was first assigned to Truck 19 on Denver's east side and then transferred to Engine 19. In 1998, he was promoted to the rank of engineer and assigned to Engine 7 in northwest Denver. He continues his career with the Denver Fire Department. Spurgeon received his AAS degree in fire science technology from Red Rocks Community College.
