Media, Movements, and Political Change

This volume of eight essays explores the relationship between different kinds of media, political movements and social change. The essays are organized into four sections. The first two examine historical and contemporary issues in print-media, such as using novels to explore labor problems, social movement coverage by partisan news outlets, and the media's framing of the 2009 G20 conference in Pittsburgh. They then turn toward Internet media and examine organizational dominance, reactionary politics online, and Obama's online presidential campaign in 2008. In the end is special discussion of conservative mobilization in the ex-gay movement. In each section the contributions are related, but do not hinge upon one another. They each contain an up-front abstract, methodology or design statement, and summary of their findings. The contributors are sociology and journalism professors from across the United States.
