Explorers entered the Australian Victoria River District as early as 1830 and began driving herds of cattle there in 1883, resulting in ever increasing conflict with the native Aboriginals. This work covers the story of ordinary Australians through the early 1900s. Although the introduction notes that it was written in a "vernacular style," the book is actually a revision of a PhD thesis and quite scholarly. In addition to extensive footnotes, it provides a comprehensive bibliography, which includes library special collections, unpublished documents and maps, and archival material. Lewis (National Museum of Australia) has written four books during his 40 years living among Aboriginal and white Australians in the Northern Territory. Distributed in the US by ISBS.
