商品簡介
Unlike other studies on the subject, this book begins with General Douglas MacArthur's service in the Philippines starting in 1935, because his experience there contains the origins of the Occupation polices he adopted later in Japan. Masuda (history, Toyo Eiwa University) chronicles the period from October 1941 to the Japanese surrender in August 1945, with special focus on the Bataan Boys (general's staff in Asia) and their origins, drawing on American and Asian primary sources, letters, oral histories, and documents. The author goes into detail on MacArthur's role in Asia beyond the end of WWII, through the demilitarization and democratization of Japan August 1945 through April 1950, Washington's policy shift on Japan and MacArthur's resistance, the Korean War, and the dismissal of MacArthur. The book includes b&w maps and a few b&w historical photos, including the cover. The book was first published in Japanese in 2009. It is translated by historian Reiko Yamamoto.
