This title provides the Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon results of an archaeological excavation held in the early 1980s at Barrow Hills, Radley; the earlier, prehistoric phases of the site were reported on in the first volume (Barclay and Halpin 1999). The book first provides extensive introductory information, including the archaeological background to the excavation, the geophysical survey, and the site and excavation strategy including the recording system and post-excavation analysis, then provides the site evidence in six further sections: the third to fourth century Romano-British cemetery, structural evidence for the Anglo-Saxon settlement, Anglo-Saxon pottery from the site (which remains one of the largest assemblages of pottery excavated in England), finds from the settlement, the environmental evidence, and the evidence of the fifth to seventh century Anglo-Saxon settlement. It is suggested in the text that this Anglo-Saxon settlement may have included the previously excavated, nearby Barton Court Farm, whose features are discussed in this publication, and continuity between the Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon features is speculated due to the position of the Anglo-Saxon building features in relation to the Romano-British cemetery and trackway.
