I Came, I Saw, I Translated

Mannetter (philosophy and classics, College of Saint Scholatica, Minnesota) tried several of the major textbooks in his one-year sequence introducing Latin. Here he offers a textbook that does not assume students know English grammar, gets them reading Latin immediately, provides a coherent narrative in the Latin texts rather than isolated quotation, and deals with syntax in a clear way. As in so many generations of Latin learning, the text is Julius Caesar's The Gallic War, but enough of it to get a picture of what happened, or rather what the good general wanted everyone to think happened.
