商品簡介
George (information studies, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) is a ten-year veteran of Singapore's mainstream national press. Drawing on American and European scholarship as well as Asian perspectives, he offers a detailed account of the mechanisms that have sustained Singapore's media control for the past 40 years, focusing mainly on newspapers as the main institutional home of journalism in Singapore. While there is not much coverage of government-owned broadcast media, the author does examine Singapore's policies on the Internet and alternative online media. The book begins with a concise overview of Singapore's politics and media industry, then examines tactics used by the People's Action Party (PAP) to maintain control of the media, such as manipulating market forces, pretending to embrace internal reform, and creating economic disincentives against non-cooperation with the state. The book is written for Singaporeans who research, produce, or consume journalism, as well as non-Singaporeans studying the relationship between media and power.
