This volume grew out of the experience of Rees (history, Colorado State U.) in teaching a survey course on American history in the post-Reconstruction era (lasting until WWI). Rather than take a strictly chronological approach, Rees provides a thematic analysis that is grounded in his conviction that "industrialization and its effects are the one underlying development from this period that affected everything else that happened." He expands upon and defends that thesis in separate chapters examining varieties of industrialization, labor, immigration, urbanization, the development of the West, environmental issues, transportation, and the politics of industrialization and reform. Each theme is developed both in its general contours and in relation to specific organizations, movements, pieces of legislation, and other illustrative topics.
