商品簡介
This pocket guide (5x8.25") offers a self-guided walking tour of the sites of 21 former synagogues in Vienna, Austria. The book is of special interest to architects, but it is also accessible to general readers interested in Jewish history. A special feature of the book is its computer-assisted 3D illustrations and models, based on historic photos, plans, and paintings, that reconstruct synagogue interiors and exteriors, plus computer-generated block-by-block city maps showing synagogue locations and their neighborhoods past and present. The book also includes numerous maps, color and b&w contemporary historical photos and illustrations, and architectural plans. The synagogue profiles are arranged according to location, to make it easier to visit several former synagogue sites in one trip. The profiles give details on the creation and destruction of each synagogue and discuss problems in interpreting primary sources to make the 3D computer illustrations. Details on changes in building ownership since 1938 are also provided. The book includes biographies of architects and an appendix describing how the computer assisted images and models were created. Martens teaches architecture and urban planning at TU Vienna. Peter teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. The book is distributed in North America by ISBS.
