商品簡介
Globalization holds out a promise of improvement for developing nations, but at the same time it threatens whether they can remain "nation-states," with national politics, a national economy, and a national culture. In this collection of 13 essays, contributors describe how globalization has the potential to dislocate the nation-states of Africa and Asia in rather short order. Topics concerning states under stress include the Asian crisis, political stresses in South Asia, conditions in Bangladesh, marginalization and state transformation in Africa, and Burma as a forecast for failure in Southeast Asia. Those on societies in flux include the fates of Indians living in South Africa, conditions for Maragoli immigrants in Nairobi, and issues raised by globalization in Sarawak, Kenya, and Thailand. Closing essays address prospects at the international level. The book is distributed in the US by ISBS. Annotation c2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
