This book is the result of a group project in which the authors (all of the U. of Michigan) conducted group discussions on how academic scholars can conduct their community-based research in the spirit of "critical engagement" that serves the public interest. They have proceeded with their inquiry through autoethnography, which is grounded in the question of how the scholar's own experience with a culture provides insight into its functioning. Through this process, they came to understand engagement as "opportunities to share our knowledge and learn with those who struggle for social justice; and to collaborate with them respectfully and responsibly for the purpose of improving life." Foster-Fishman is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Michigan State University.
