Thaiss (university writing program, U. of California, Davis) et al. compile 42 essays that originated in the International Writing Across the Curriculum/Writing In Disciplines Mapping Project, which began in 2006, to help teachers, program managers, and college and university administrators manage, create, fund, and teach in college writing programs. Essays were drawn from the project's 350 survey responses and are by individuals involved in programs around the world. They present profiles of different types of programs (subject, modular, tutorial, collaborative, formal, and informal) within the context of their motives, theories, and practices within national, regional, and transnational research. They address questions such as the institution's size, history, and mission; geographic, economic, and cultural features of its location; what literacy and writing mean to students and teachers; where and what students write; who cares about student growth through writing and how it is shown in funding, requirements, attitudes, and actions; when and how teachers meet to discuss and plan ways to help students grow as writers; the models, theories, authors, and principles that form the basis for courses or methods; successes and ambitions in teaching writing; and individual students or events that illustrate successes and frustrations.
