Presented in chronological order by musical period, these documents include letters, reviews, biographical sketches, and memoirs. Weiss (Peabody Conservatory, Johns Hopkins U.) and Taruskin (U. of California at Berkeley) have updated this edition to contain more selections and provide introductions to periods placing the documents in historical context. It contains a new section that has 11 reading units on recent topics such as New Romanticism, postmodernism, and feminist perspectives. Three units have been added to the twentieth century section. Others on public opera performances, new ideas about folklore in the Romantic period, and Verdi have been added. No musical knowledge is necessary.
