In theory, the term Fundamentalism is applied here to movements that try to insulate their authority from outside critique and protect their adherents from the influence of contemporary culture in Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and other religions, as a platform for comparative study. In fact the contributors, most from US universities, are primarily concerned with Christian fundamentalism of the 20th century, mostly in the US. In articles typically several pages long, they examine such subjects as abortion, the devil and satan, grace, the Ku Klux Klan, the Old Testament, Protestantism, Southeast Asia, communism, faith healing, nativism, primitivism, the Salvation Army, and the tridentine mass. Bibliographies are topic-specific, and the cross-referencing is good. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
