商品簡介
This volume collects 16 historical studies of the British Empire by Marshall (a former Rhodes Professor of Imperial History at King's College, London, UK). Although the majority of Marshall's career was concerned with the history of India, only one of these essays deals with the Empire in India. Instead, the essays (originally published between 1981 and 2001) look at the thirteen colonies of North America, the West Indies, and British Contacts with China. In general, he argues that empire was mostly spurred by state feelings of insecurity vis-a-vis the French, rather than by financial, landed, or capitalist interests.
