These papers were presented at the symposium held for this subject area at the April 2004 meeting of the Materials Research Society. Contributors presented their research in semiconductors, insulators, ferroelectrics and polymers, with general topics including rare-earth doped structures, photonic bandgap crystals, and electro-optic materials. New concepts and devices included hybrid integrated microphotonics, optoelectronic simulation of the Klein Paradox based on negative refraction phenomena, a carbon layer as a new material for optics, and ordered micro-particle structures in liquid crystal.
