In this study, White (history, U. of Tennessee) critically examines U.S. foreign policy toward Africa during the Eisenhower administration. The volume opens with a general discussion of American views regarding African decolonization and nationalism, followed by individual chapters assessing the administration's dealings with Ethiopia, Ghana, South Africa, and the Congo. Particular attention is paid to the impact of Whiteness and White privilege on how U.S. officials evaluated various diplomatic options during the Cold War.
