Ten-year-old Kendall Ralston carries a fading photo of his twin sister whose absence has left a constant ache in his heart since his father took him from his sister and their mother when the twins were only four years old. His life is a lonely and confusing mystery as he travels with his father from town to town, often leaving suddenly in the middle of the night, leaving scant belongings behind. Kendall knows that if his dad won't answer a question, it's because the answer is bad news. One thing he does know is that Dad hates cowards. And Kendall is afraid of just about everything. Rescuing a puppy from a hail storm marks the beginning of a change in Kendall's life as he learns that love, even from a puppy, can ease loneliness and fear. Through the many adventures that Kendall and his dog, Storm experience, Kendall learns the truth about his dad, his life, and better yet, he learns to accept himself as the person he is and what he knows he can become. This and the companion novel, Kyleah's Tree, about separate twins' lives will soon be followed by a third book, completing the trilogy of twins in search of one another.

Janet Muirhead Hill is best known for her Miranda and Starlight series of six books about a young girl, the horse she loves, and the trials and triumphs that bind their souls. Mrs. Hill writes from her rural Montana home where she draws from her experiences from growing up on a cattle ranch in the Colorado Rockies to raising children on the Alberta, Canada prairies, operating oil rigs in Kansas, raising horses, co-owning a manufacturing company in Montana, and assisting in raising grandchildren. She has studied and worked as a licensed practical nurse, has done custom haying and farming, and taken courses in pre-medicine, public health, human development and, of course, creative writing. All of these experiences and her love and concern for humanity, especially children, influence her stories, as she writes what she calls “true fiction.” It is a name she derived from Wallace Stegner's words: “It is fiction as truth that I am concerned with here, fiction that reflects experience instead of escaping it, that stimulates instead of deadening.” Not only does she write books that are true-to-life but books that also, in the words of John Gardner, “seek to improve life, not debase it.” Her true fiction has elicited comments like these from many of her young fans. “I felt like I was there.” “I can really relate.” “Miranda reminds me of me.” “This book deals with real problems we kids face.” In 1997, Mrs. Hill launched a small, desktop published periodical, Alone Together, as a forum for survivors of childhood abuse and trauma. In late 2001, she expanded that venture into a book publishing company to produce her own and other authors' “true fiction” by publishing from two to four titles each year. She has completed a workbook to go with her three-day “Writing True Fiction Workshops” has edited and co-written comprehensive cross-curricular units for two of her novels. Her published work also includes, Danny's Dragon, a middle-grade novel about a young Montana rancher's son who has lost his father in the war. Kendall's Storm is the second book in a trilogy about the separate lives of orphan twins and their eventual reunion. The first, Kyleah's Tree, was published in 2008. Hill is currently writing the third, in which the twins are united.
