1) Most of the words in these photos are translated with the original words except forsome people's name and the name of some places.
2) All the loan words are borrowed from Chinese and English and the number of theloan words is small.
3) The Chinese language exerts a tremendous influence on the Mongolian translationsand many of the translations are translated from Chinese word-for-word.
4) Some of the Mongolia translations have some errors.
According to the conservative statistic, there are 18 word-for-word translations inthese 49 billborads, take up 37%. If strictly statistic, it will close to 50%.For example, theword 蔬菜 in No. 10 is translated into huh nogoo (blue vegetables), 水產 is translatedinto usan garalt (come from water). At the translation of 新特價書屋 in No.7, 特價 istranslated into onchgoi unetei (with special price) and 書屋 is translated into nomiin oroo(the room ofbook). The word 酒樓 in No.1 is translated into arhin asar (alcohol building).
It is common known that 蔬菜 is called 青菜 in some north Chinese dialect. But itdoes not refer to all the blue vegetables. The word 水產 refers to all the economic valuableanimals and plants come from the river and the sea and can be translated into fish andshrimp or the productions from water. It is no need to translate word-for-word from Chinese.The word 酒樓 means restaurant or cafe while it is not the building made fromalcohol. And it is not accurate to use the word dotor hubtsas to translate the word 內衣.The accurate a translation is dotuur hubtsas.
Using the original Mongolian word to translate is a good thing. But using loan word inmoderation is the need of culture exchange and human communication because there is noself sufficient language in this world. But accepting excessive influence and translatingword-for-word from Chinese will be hard for the Mongolian herds people to understand andwill be not conducive to Mongolian language conservation and development.
3. On advertising vocabulary and the change of Environment
Chen Yuan, Chinese pulisher and linguist, said that: "the language variation can be broughtabout by many factors, such as time, society, social group (class, stratum, othersocial group,for example student work woman), etc." (Chen 1983) Though advertising vocabulary holdsa small proportion in vocabulary, it can also be affected by time, region, society and socialgroup.
