a well-respected elderly member of Chinese Academy of Engineering,is already in her 70s.Instead of enjoying a relaxedretirement life,she is still active in the classroom.She continues to teach a popular university-wide general elective course,"EnvironmentalProtection and Sustainable Development." A pioneer Chinese educator and researcher on this discipline,she designed and opened this courseat Tsinghua more than fifteen years ago.Her class was cited as a model for best practice in classroom teaching nationally.An expert in thecontrol and prevention of water pollution,Professor Qian spent her lifetime in furthering environmental science research and education.Shesees her primarily responsibility in raising young people's environmental awareness and informing them on sustainable research and strategies.Born in a traditional Chinese intellectual family,Professor Qian is the daughter of renowned Sinologist,Master Qian Mu.Influenced by herparents,an academic career was her childhood aspiration.After completing graduate studies at Tsinghua,she was first hired as a researcherand lecturer at the university.Since then,Professor Qian spent decades in the research and optimization of high-efficiency water treatmenttechnology and contributed to addressing China's water pollution problem.She served as the deputy director of NPC Environmental and Resources Protection Committee,vice president of World Federation of Engineering Organizations,and member of the advisory board for WorldResources Institute.In 1994,she was elected as the academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering.Currently,Professor Qian is the directorof Academic Committee of Tsinghua University.
Teaching has brought her much pleasure and joy in life.Professor Qian's care for students is not confined within the walls of classrooms andlaboratories.Yet her genuine interest in the well-being of her students shows through her every interaction with them both on-campus and offcampus.She is a trusted confidante and mentor to her pupils.Students voted her as their favorite professors and nominated her as the recipiebt of several teaching awards.Professor Qian is keen in presenting complicated concepts in simple and interesting terms.Passionate aboutsharing the latest development of her field,she always picks out readings from new releases and order extra copies of conference handoutsreserved for her students.She never imposes her own views upon them,but is always supportive in helping students discover and pursuetheir own research interest and career aspiration.With the exception of her out-of-town meetings,Professor Qian almost never,missed a singlesession of her students' discussion sessions,club meetings,and get-togethers.An advocate of extracurricular activities,she always tries herbest to accommodate any student organization's request for her presentation and lecturing.A generous and kind professor,she has given awayher own salary to help students from less privileged families.No matter how busy she is,she always pays attention to detail when gradingstudent'papers meticulous down to the correction of the oversight on punctuation marks.
