商品簡介
Building on her doctoral research but writing for the general reader as well as specialists, Witts fills in the stories told by some 200 figured mosaics from Roman Britain known to have survived into this century. Picking the most interesting examples, she describes their details and places them in the context of their cultural background, especially the surviving body of writing from Greek and Latin authors. She considers the significance of the images to their contemporary viewers, notably the patrons who commissioned them. The mosaics are divided thematically into chapters, including love stories, stories of heroes, personifications of time, gods and goddesses, and the arena and the hunt. The volume includes many b&w photos and 16 inset pages of color plates. Distributed in the US by Trafalgar Square Publishing. Annotation c2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
