The book looks at both protection from external threats, such as financial scams and crime, and protection from the internal problems of the NHS, which have often led to state-perpetrated poor care and neglect. After an overview of the NHS's law and policy on safeguarding adults, chapters cover regulation of health and social care providers, mental capacity, and criminal justice assistance for vulnerable suspects and perpetrators. Michael Mandelstam has worked independently for over 15 years providing legal training, advice and consultancy to local authorities, the NHS and voluntary organisations. Prior to this, he worked at the Disabled Living Foundation, a national voluntary organisation, before moving to the Social Services Inspectorate at the Department of Health. He holds postgraduate qualifications in law, information studies and the history of medicine.
