This first of four volumes was conceived by Baldi (linguistics and classics, Pennsylvania State U.) and Cuzzolin (linguistics, U. of Bergamo, Italy) to in response to the limitations of a Neogrammarian/structuralist approach to describing the historical syntax of Latin (it has been more successful, they say, in phonology and morphology). In this volume, they join other specialists in using a functional-typological methodology to investigate the long-term syntactic history of the Latin sentence. Diachronic phenomena are examined from their discourse function as revealed in Latin texts. Texts are translated into English. Subjects covered by the eight chapters include: syntax, sociolinguistics, and literary genres; Latin syntax and Greek; Semitic influence in the history of Latin syntax; word order; coordination; and questions and answers.
