Images That Move

The 11 chapters in this volume arise out of the "Images without Borders" seminar held at the School for Advanced Research in May of 2008. The concern of this work is the inter-cultural circulation of images, or, as editors Spyer (Leiden U., the Netherlands) and Steedly (Harvard U., US) write in their introduction, about the "set of propositions about affect, agency, circulation, and spectatorship implied by the multivalent, troubling notion of 'images that move'" through both space and time. Specific topics include: images and imaginaries of neoliberal lifestyle in New Delhi; photographic images and experiences from China; photographic practices and publics in India from 1840 to 2008; images of future history and the posthuman in postapartheid South Africa; media ghosts of post-new order Indonesia; and the "white sheik" (a man racially marked as white trying to pass for an Arab) as a modular (meaning with malleable features) image in 20th-century popular culture.
