Colley (secondary & middle school education, William Paterson U.) and Colley (education & social services, U. of Vermont) present this exploration of motivations and difficulties of African American women in science. The book starts by building a solid foundation of historical data on women in science, education of African American women, and their intersection, as well as methodology for studying race and gender issues in science. Roughly the second half of the book describes the methodology of these authors, results of their surveys interviews, and reflections on how to equalize opportunity and support. Observing that self-perception as the type of person who can become a scientist is important, the book is intended as both an illumination of current trajectories and an inspiration for future African American women who may wish to be scientists.
