ACE inhibitors were specifically designed to block the enzyme that is responsible for converting the inactive peptide angiotensin I to the active and powerful vasoconstrictor angiotensin II. Of all antihypertensive drugs, ACE inhibitors have the least adverse effects and patients feel extremely well on these drugs. They are approved for all degrees of hypertension and are of particular value when congestive heart failure coexists.
