Susan Hill Long was inspired to write this book when she heard Garrison Keillor, on his program The Writer's Almanac, talk about a group of men working underground in the mines, unaware of anything out-of-the-ordinary happening above until the power goes out. Susan has worked as an editor and has written several books for beginning readers. Her awards include a Bank Street College Best Book and The Katherine Paterson Prize. This is her first novel. She lives in Oregon.
