On Learning from the Patient

This is a re-publication of a 1985 title which, along with several subsequent titles by the same author (including his book Further Learning from the Patient), remains a notable publication in the field of psychoanalysis. Casement's topic is fostering an 'internal supervision' process during psychotherapeutic interactions--that is, prioritizing an analyst's ability to see the process through a patient's eyes as well as through the analyst's own expectations, and to dynamically revise the process accordingly. A new introduction provided for this edition describes Casement as a pioneer in relational, or interactional, approaches to psychotherapy, and places his work in the context of a growing understanding that what a patient brings to the process matters as much, if not more, as the skill of the practitioner in affecting outcomes. Patrick Casement is a Fellow of the Institute of Psychoanalysis and a Member of the International Association of Psychoanalysis. He was formerly a training analyst of the British Psychoanalytical Society, having been in full-time private practice for many years, now retired. He is the author of numerous publications including Learning from Life (Routledge, 2006) and Learning from our Mistakes (Routledge, 2002).
